How Yahoo Blew It

Your probably wondering what did Yahoo blow up, this was the title of an interesting article on wirednews that Rand linked to in his last post, I am going to post the same interesting findings from the article that Rand posted since it is the most interesting part of the article:

Semel has been Yahoo’s CEO for nearly six years, yet he has never acquired an intuitive sense of the company’s plumbing. He understands how to do deals and partnerships, he gets how to market Yahoo’s brand, and he knows how to tap Yahoo’s giant user base to sell brand advertising to corporations. But the challenges of integrating two giant computer systems or redesigning a database or redoing a user interface? Many who have met with him at Yahoo say he still doesn’t know the right questions to ask about technology. “Terry could never pound the table and say, ‘This is where we need to go, guys,’” one former Yahoo executive says. “On those subjects, he always had to have someone next to him explaining why it was important.” One could have made a convincing argument two years ago that such deep technical knowledge didn’t matter much. But now we have empirical evidence: At Yahoo, the marketers rule, and at Google the engineers rule. And for that, Yahoo is finally paying the price.

Rand from SEOMoz continues to mention interesting points in his post about why he thinks Google became a bigger brand than Yahoo:

  • User interface
Google’s clean UI was revolutionary and attractive; it’s still one of the elements consumers cite most about their use of the engine.
  • Purity of function
Google’s concentration on search (at least in the early years) made them first and foremost a search engine in people’s mind. Yahoo! was a directory, a portal, an email service, etc. and, oh yeah, also an engine.
  • Appeal to Geeks
Google appealed to tech geeks - the people who set the home pages on computers around corporate offices and at home for Grandma. When thousands of influencers in a field become obsessed with a product, it achieves mass popularity (just look at Apple).
  • Viral spread
Google’s marketing was nearly invisible at a time when invisible, viral marketing was being embraced by consumers, particularly those in the web world.
  • Early quality advantage
Perhaps no single factor is of greater import - Google’s early lead in quality was so large that switching to Google was an obvious choice. In my opinion, this was Yahoo!’s biggest failure - letting Google return more relevant results. The funny part - I honestly can’t say whether senior management was responsible for or could have controlled this factor. It could be that Google simply had a few people with better ideas and all the hiring and R&D in the world couldn’t have saved Yahoo!.
  • Media obsession
Being a media darling made Google incredibly well placed to get early interest from even the stodgiest of users. And, with no need to market or advertise (since press releases on the average consistency of Googlers snot got more coverage than a major media play from Yahoo!), Google could spend that money in R&D to continue their edge.

I can only say that I agree with Rand’s thoughts, Google did allot of correct steps towards creating the giant they are now, while Yahoo! did lots of big mistakes in my opinion.

Anyhow, all of you probably know that there was a Google PR update going last week, this update was particularly interesting to watch compared to other updates, 1st of all, it took longer than any of the previous updates took to happen, and the results were strange and it seems that i am not the only one that has the same thoughts, I did somewhat of a small experiment myself, i linked to a new site of mine from PR6 and PR7 pages only a month or so before the PR update, and the results came back just like I expected, no PR increase for that site at all, it seems that Google is now effectively denies a website any PR value unless the links your getting stay on those pages longer than a month (not sure of the time exactly)

I’ve been mainly working for the past 2 weeks on project F, its almost done now, needs a bit more work and it should be ready to launch, hopefully ill be able to share some good news about it in the coming week, the main developer I am using for the project was experiencing internet problems and this lead to a bit more delay, this sort of thing is expected when dealing with freelancers, I guess everyone using freelancers is used to this.

I know I haven’t been sharing lots of personal project news that I usually used to share and I apologize for that, I’ll do my best to write a post to sum up everything that has been going on for the past month as far as my websites are concerned.

btw shoemoney made a nice post about the wordpress plugins he usually uses, I’ve had the Akismet plugin added in my plugins folder but never installed it, its not installed and hopefully it will solve the blog spam issue I’ve been bombarded with for the past months.

Haven’t Been Doing Much

Things have been going slow lately, mostly because I haven’t been doing much work and wasting time here and there, not much updates on my websites, I found some bugs in the wallpaper site and the humor site, the wallpaper site is all fixed now and I am still waiting for the bugs on the humor site to be fixed, I also bought 2 video packs for the site and I am waiting for the bugs to be fixed to install them.

I’ve setup a new proxy site as well, these sites are so easy to promote, the sites hasn’t finished a month and its already getting around 100 uniques per day with absolutely no paid promotion.

There is this one major site that I am working on, this will be my absolute biggest project for the upcoming months that I am actually thinking of putting anything else on hold, I am not going to get into more details now, but I’ll tell you this, the site is based on affiliate programs from Azoogle, CJ and others. Some of you might be familiar with such sites, especially those of you who are into affiliate marketing, to others this will be a new concept to them.

Not sure if I mentioned this earlier but I sold my main arcade site, www.myspacerush.com I still have another un-developed arcade that I am thinking to develop with a friend, arcades are also very easy to promote and get traffic to with a considerably small budget, compared to other sites. Ive found that arcades are easier to promote than myspace resource sites, I originally planned on starting a number of those myspace resource sites, like layout4myspace.com which I also recently sold, but I don’t think ill be doing those any more.

I’ve got some new hosting clients too, which is great because I have done anything to get them, no advertising or forum posting, which means they either came through search engines or through word of mouth, either of them is great, Ive actually thought of finishing up the new design I got some time ago and launching the new site but I always find a way for not doing that, I guess I am becoming a bit lazy when it comes to writing new content especially for a hosting site, probably because I am not into hosting as I used to be 2 years ago.

I’ve been giving post4hosting allot of thought lately, a new partnership with a hosting forum was one option that I talked about with a friend who owns a part of that forum, apparently they are excited about the idea of merging the two forums together and offering the p4h members a way to keep the hosting if they stay active in the hosting forum, I am not sure if this is the best way for doing it, as members of that forum would want to get free hosting as well, and in the end it will turn to be another post4hosting, and I am not really sure if this a good thing for both sites.

That’s it for now, let me get back and try to do some work for a change!

1st of all, let me express how happy I am with the launch of our new myspace games website, myspacerush.com is now up and running with its new coded design, your feedback is deeply appreciated :)

Well lets come down to my new idea, I am going to follow Tyler’s and Bryan’s lead in giving my project code name, well here it is, project Chayron is my new big project under development, this will probably be my biggest project that I have ever planned for, lots of development and planning has to go into it, I wont disclose any information about it just yet, I am going to start laying out the steps the project would go through, estimated costs for each step and the amount of work/time needed for each one.

btw, I use Chayron as my username on some forums, so don’t get confused.

In my previous post I counted the number of website I currently own, I cant believe I missed too! lol, so the counter is up to 22 now…

I will be posting a quick update soon as soon as me and Imad finish up some websites that were planning on putting for sale.

That’s it for now I guess!

You need to spend money to earn money, that’s the bottom line, I registered two new domain name today, one for another myspace project, and the other will be used for a content and a project that I have in mind, i still have to look for a domain name for the Humor website, which I bought the script for a couple of days ago.

I really need to start working on my current projects and stop starting new ones, I need to start optimizing my sites, and doing some link building for them, I already did some new link building for THB, hopefully I’ll get to at least a PR5 by then next update, I know PR doesn’t matter allot, but I like that little green bar :P

I am also planning to write up some SEO related articles and submit them to a few newsletters, press releases are another thing I am planning to do, I must start the contest on THB and announce it, I’ll probably write my own press release for that contest, maybe modify the one used to announce the launch of THB and modify it.

THB is about to reach 3000 posts, it should have been double that number, but I am happy with the quality of the topics we have there.

On a more personal level, I am planning to go to the movies this weekend to watch Ice Age: The Meltdown, I’v seen the 1st part and loved it. The 2nd part is definitely funnier from what I can tell from the trailer.

I’ve set my mind on a great script for a video website, you know the type of sites with funny videos in different categories, anyways the script that I found was way cheaper from the one I saw at the beginning (which was $150) this one has almost all of the features, and way cheaper, I’ve sent a pm to the script owner today and I expect to get the script in a day or two.

Domain Hunting

Now I need to start looking for a suitable domain name for this site, something creative and yet has some SEO potential in it. Any ideas?

MyspaceLobby

This site has been doing great recently, it got around 3000 uniques last month and now has a PR4, sadly after adding the Google sitemap to it (I didn’t have a good feeling about it, but my partner wanted to add it) the website lost the rankings I achieved for it on Google, it dropped from the 2nd page to the 9th page :? I’ve read about some sites adding the sitemaps and then losing their rankings, that’s a lesson for the future I guess, the website is moving backup, but slowly, it initially dropped to page 11 after adding the site map, now its on the 9th page with results varying from one DC to the other, that’s of course after deleting that damn sitemap.

I am not 100% positive that the sitemap did that, maybe it went back in the sandbox, but that didn’t happen for a new site that I optimized for a client and it still have a page 1 rankings for almost the same key term.

Besides Google, the site has an excellent ranking on MSN, rankings on Yahoo and yet to happen “hopefully” I guess it needs some more work, and I’ll have to make some time for it.

I am considering buying a video game script that enables me to have my own funny video site, I’ve been thinking about this for quite some time now, the original price of the script is $1000, but the owner dropped the price to $150 as an initial payment and then pay him $50 per month, which has made me consider getting the script.

I also need to think of a good domain name for such a site. Any suggestions?

I’ve been discussing in the past few days with a couple of potential partners, will be officially partners once we sign an official agreement but I consider them partners, well anyways, we’ve discussing the potential of building a new network together that is mainly centered around online advertising and SEO, were still working out the details, everything sounds good so far, were also working out the new network name, we should finish this detail today.

I guess that’s about it for now, I will probably update this post today once I talk with them again.

I am having this idea of starting a tutorial’s website, I have a friend of mine that I might partner with for this website, he’s excellent in Photoshop so the website will start with Photoshop tutorials and then expand the tutorial categories depending on how well the website goes, tutorials would probably be free for everyone, well I guess this idea goes into the pipeline!
